About this tour

"Barcelona must be a modern city, rooted in its history, yet open to the future."

Josep Puig i Cadafalch

Highlights & What’s included

Overview

In a city celebrated for Gaudí, there’s another architectural genius waiting to be discovered: Josep Puig i Cadafalch. A key figure of Catalan Modernisme, Puig was not only an architect, but also a historian, politician, and passionate defender of Catalonia’s cultural identity. His works are rich in symbolism, steeped in history, and strikingly original — offering a different, deeply intellectual lens through which to understand Barcelona.

Exploring Puig i Cadafalch’s architecture means uncovering a lesser-known but equally fascinating side of the city. From the fairytale towers of Casa de les Punxes, to the intricate elegance of Casa Amatller, and the industrial beauty of the Casaramona textile factory, his legacy is everywhere — if you know where to look.

This 4-hour tour invites architecture lovers and curious minds alike to step off the usual paths and experience a Barcelona that is both modern and medieval, political and poetic. Through Puig’s works, we not only admire buildings — we uncover stories of identity, resistance, and artistic ambition.

If you want to go beyond postcards and get to the soul of Barcelona’s architecture, a journey into Puig i Cadafalch’s world is simply unforgettable.

What will you see

Plaça d’Espanya & Montjuïc

We start with an introduction to the grand urban transformation of the 1929 International Exhibition. Standing in Plaça d’Espanya, you’ll learn how Puig i Cadafalch envisioned Montjuïc as a cultural and monumental space, laying the groundwork for Barcelona’s 20th-century identity.

Fàbrica Casaramona (CaixaForum) – Interior Visit

A pioneering example of industrial Modernisme, this former textile factory blends form and function with beauty. You’ll explore vaulted ceilings, brick façades, decorative ironwork, and understand how Cadafalch revolutionized industrial architecture by treating factories as works of art.

Casa Martí & Els Quatre Gats Café

We’ll take a break in the famous modernist café where Picasso and his circle once gathered. Casa Martí’s neo-Gothic façade, stained glass, and sculptural details are a perfect example of Cadafalch’s stylistic blend of medieval influences with modernist flair.

Palau Macaya

A serene and elegant structure with white stone façades, horseshoe arches, and floral motifs. You’ll see how Cadafalch incorporated Islamic, Romanesque, and Gothic elements while creating an original modernist language.

Casa de les Punxes

An urban fairytale castle, this house for the Terradas sisters is one of Barcelona’s most photographed buildings. The façade is rich in symbolism, including stained glass and ceramic panels inspired by Catalan legends.

Palau del Baró de Quadras

This building surprises with its dual façades: one neo-Gothic and richly sculpted, the other in more sober modernist lines. A unique opportunity to appreciate how Cadafalch adapted to both street environments and social functions.

Casa Amatller – Full Interior Visit

A masterpiece of Catalan Modernisme. Alongside Gaudí’s Casa Batlló, Casa Amatller stands out with its stepped Flemish-style gable, ornate sculptures, and colorful tile work. Inside, you’ll explore original furniture, art nouveau lighting, and one of the few perfectly preserved kitchens of the era. It’s a time capsule of upper-class life in early 20th-century Barcelona.
