About this tour

"Barcelona is the only city in the world that can be both passionate and serene at the same time."

Mario Vargas Llosa (Nobel Prize-winning Writer)

Highlights & What’s included

Overview

This is a private small-group tour (max ~10 people), the pace and route are fully customizable. We adapt to your interests and energy level – no queues, no crowds, just a relaxed, in-depth adventurefile.

From the sweeping panoramas atop Montjuïc to the narrow alleys of the Barri Gòtic, exploring Barcelona by bicycle offers a captivating perspective. With year-round sunshine and a well-developed network of bike lanes (over 200 km of protected cycle paths), cycling here is an energizing, eco-friendly way to see the city. As Barcelona Metropolitan notes, the “health benefits… are second to none” and biking is an inexpensive way to explore. Gaudí Tours harnesses this dynamism to create a rich, narrative journey. Our guides are licensed art historians and architecture specialists who “know the secrets of the city they call home”. In other words, you get expert storytelling at every turn.

Unlike a conventional ride, this is a high-quality cultural experience, blending Barcelona’s art, history and modernist heritage in every pedal stroke.

Itinerary

Sample 4-Hour Itinerary

(This sample route is fully adaptable: we will customize stops and duration based on your group’s interests, ages and energy. Whether you need more rest stops, wish to focus on art vs. history, or take a shorter route for kids, the itinerary can be tailored)

  1. Meeting & Bikes (City Center):We begin with pick-up at your hotel or a convenient central point (often Plaça Catalunya or the Gothic Quarter). After fitting helmets and bicycles (normal or electric), your guide will brief you on the day’s highlights and safety (kids are welcome and have their own bikes or trailers).
  2. Gothic Quarter & El Born:We immediately pedal into the Barri Gòtic. As we ride its narrow lanes, the guide explains Roman and medieval Barcelona. You’ll pass the Palau de la Generalitat and Barcelona’s Cathedral, then head toward El Born. In Born we stop at the awe-inspiring Santa Maria del Mar church and the old merchants’ quarter, hearing tales of 14th-century shipwrights and art patrons.
  3. Arc de Triomf & Parc de la Ciutadella:Next we cross under the brick Arc de Triomf (iconic gateway of the 1888 World Fair) and enter Parc de la Ciutadella. Here, among the trees and fountains, we pause at Fontserè’s Cascada and the small lake. This is a great spot for a short break or photo-op (the kids can stretch their legs on the lawn while adults enjoy a drink).
  4. Barceloneta & Waterfront:Exiting the park, we ride toward the sea. Via a cycle-friendly route through the Olympic Port, we reach Barceloneta Beach. You will feel the breeze of the Mediterranean as you admire the sandy shore and local fishermen’s neighborhood. This coastal leg offers a refreshing contrast to the city streets.
  5. Passeig de Gràcia (Modernisme Block):Turning inland, we enter the Eixample district via Passeig de Gràcia. Here stands the famous “Manzana de la Discordia” – a block where Casa Amatller, Casa Lleó Morera and Casa Batlló compete in fanciful design. We stop to admire Gaudí’s Casa Batlló and nearby Casa Milà (La Pedrera) – UNESCO-listed Modernist masterpieces– while your guide explains how nature and legend inspired their forms.
  6. Sagrada Família (Exterior):Our final cultural landmark is the Sagrada Família, Gaudí’s still-unfinished basilica. We pause outside its Nativity façade to discuss the architect’s vision (this façade and crypt are part of UNESCO’s “Works of Gaudí” heritage listing). (If you wish, we can arrange to enter the church afterward, or simply enjoy gelato nearby while our guide explain every detail.)
  7. Return & Optional Extension:The standard tour concludes back in the city center (or by your hotel). Along the way, your guide will point out any final sights and answer questions. Optional: You can extend the tour (for example, to cycle up Montjuïc or spend extra time at certain attractions) – our guides are happy to accommodate your interests.

What will you see

Plaza Catalunya: This lively square is the heart of Barcelona with its large shopping centres and department stores, is constantly teeming with people. It is Barcelona’s most central area and a favourite meeting place for locals and visitors. It also connects the Eixample and the old town.

La Rambla: Barcelona’s iconic boulevard, is a stage where the city’s vibrant spirit unfolds. A lively artery of plane trees and flower stalls, it pulses with street performers, bustling cafés, and the intoxicating energy of La Boqueria Market—a symphony of colors, scents, and flavors. From the grandeur of the Gran Teatre del Liceu to Joan Miró’s whimsical mosaic embedded in the pavement, every step tells a story. Yet venture just off its crowded spine to discover hidden courtyards and Gothic gems, reminders that La Rambla is more than a tourist thoroughfare—it’s a living, breathing piece of Barcelona’s soul.

Barri Gòtic (Gothic Quarter): The ancient core of Barcelona. This is where Roman walls mingle with medieval palaces and Gothic churches. You will hear about kings and merchant guilds as we explore hidden squares like Sant Jaume and Plaça Reial, and glimpse layers of the city’s 2,000-year history.

Passeig de Gràcia (Modernista Mile): Barcelona’s grand 19th-century boulevard, famous for its fanciful architecture. Here you’ll cycle past Casa Batlló and Casa Milà (Gaudí’s organic, UNESCO-listed creations) as well as other Modernisme gems by Domènech i Montaner and Puig i Cadafalch. The guide will highlight the artistic details – mosaic tiles, sculpted stone and wrought-iron balconies – that make this a living gallery of turn-of-the-century design.

Sagrada Família: Gaudí’s monumental church, still under construction. Its soaring towers and ornate façades (especially the Nativity façade) epitomize Catalan Art Nouveau. Though we admire it from the outside, your guide will explain its symbolism – columns like trees, angels carved in stone – and how it embodies Barcelona’s spiritual and artistic identity.

Parc de la Ciutadella: The city’s main park, built on the ruins of an old citadel. Covering 31 hectares, it was Barcelona’s only public green space in the 19th century. Highlights include a boating lake, the Catalan Parliament building and the grand Cascada fountain by Josep Fontserè (with possible input from Gaudí). This is where locals picnic, jog and relax among sculptures and palms.

El Born (La Ribera): A historic artisans’ neighborhood that’s now very chic. Its narrow, romantic streets are lined with craft shops, tapas bars and art galleries. At its heart stands Santa Maria del Mar – a luminous Gothic basilica known as the “Cathedral of the People.” Built 1329–1384 by the medieval shipyard guild, it’s celebrated for its perfect proportions and serene interior. This church tells the story of medieval Barcelona’s working class and faith.

Montjuïc Hill (if time allows): A broad, green hillside overlooking the city. Chosen for the 1929 International Exposition, Montjuïc is dotted with grand structures: the Palau Nacional (now the MNAC art museum), the Magic Fountain, Olympic stadium and gardens. Up here you can enjoy sweeping views of Barcelona and the Mediterranean. It’s a peaceful, panoramic finale to your tour (and a highlight for photographers).
