Highlights

Overview

Just over an hour south of Barcelona, this exclusive 8-hour private tour takes you on a journey through time and taste—exploring the monumental legacy of Roman Tarragona and the timeless traditions of winemaking in the Penedès countryside.

Your day begins with a guided visit to Tarragona, once the Roman capital of Hispania Citerior. As you stroll through its UNESCO-listed archaeological complex, your expert guide will bring to life the grandeur of ancient Tarraco—from the awe-inspiring amphitheater by the sea to the ancient circus and city walls. Far from the crowds, Tarragona offers an intimate and authentic encounter with Catalonia’s oldest cultural roots.

After immersing yourself in this open-air museum, your journey continues inland to the fertile hills of the Penedès wine region, where a traditional, family-run winery awaits. Here, amidst vineyards and stone cellars, you’ll enjoy a private wine tasting experience that reflects generations of craftsmanship and a deep connection to the land. Unlike the large commercial cellars, this visit is truly personal and rooted in local identity.

A relaxed Mediterranean lunch—either in Tarragona’s historic quarter or at the winery—adds a delicious touch to your day, showcasing regional flavors and seasonal ingredients.

With luxury private transportation and your personal guide by your side throughout the day, this tour is more than a getaway—it’s a refined encounter with Catalonia’s glorious past and its vibrant, living traditions.

Itinerary

Scenic Drive from Barcelona to Roman Tarragona
Your private tour begins with a comfortable ride in a luxury Mercedes sedan or van, heading south along the Mediterranean coast. As the urban landscape fades, your expert guide will introduce you to the rich history of the Roman Empire in Catalonia and the strategic importance of ancient Tarraco—once one of the most important cities of the Roman world.

Arrival in Tarragona – Walking Through 2,000 Years of History
Upon arrival, you’ll embark on a guided walking tour through the historic center of Tarragona, where Roman ruins seamlessly blend with medieval streets and vibrant local life. You’ll explore key UNESCO-listed sites such as the Roman amphitheater overlooking the sea, the ancient circus, the Forum, and the impressive city walls, still standing after two millennia. Your guide will bring these ruins to life with stories of emperors, gladiators, and daily life in the Roman Empire.

Cathedral and Panoramic Views
As part of your walk, you’ll also visit the majestic Tarragona Cathedral, a Romanesque-Gothic jewel built atop a former Roman temple. The cathedral’s cloister and its views over the city and the sea offer a serene pause in your journey through time.

Traditional Lunch in the Historic Quarter
Before leaving Tarragona, enjoy a relaxed lunch at a local restaurant in the old town, where you can taste authentic Catalan cuisine, including fresh seafood, seasonal vegetables, and regional specialties—all paired with local wine if you wish. Alternatively, lunch can also be arranged at the winery upon request.

Wine Country Awaits – Drive to the Penedès Region
After lunch, your journey continues inland toward the rolling vineyards of the Penedès, one of Spain’s most prestigious wine regions. The drive offers beautiful rural scenery as you transition from ancient history to timeless winemaking traditions.

Private Visit to a Family-Owned Winery
Far from the tourist routes, you’ll arrive at a traditional, family-run winery where generations have worked the land with care and passion. Here, you’ll enjoy a private tour of the vineyards and cellars, learning about native grape varieties, organic practices, and traditional production methods. The visit culminates in a guided wine tastingof select red, white, or sparkling wines, all produced on-site in small batches.

Return to Barcelona
After a full day of culture, history, and flavor, you’ll be driven back to Barcelona in comfort. Your guide will be happy to answer any remaining questions, share more local tips, or simply let you relax as you return to the city with unforgettable memories of Catalonia’s ancient past and living traditions.

What will you see

Tarragona is one of Catalonia’s best-kept secrets—a coastal city where ancient history meets Mediterranean charm. Once the Roman capital of Hispania, it offers some of the most impressive Roman ruins outside of Italy, including a seaside amphitheater, ancient city walls, and an underground circus. But Tarragona is more than a museum: it’s a living city where history blends with local culture, charming cafés, colorful markets, and a relaxed seaside vibe. Far from the crowds, it offers a truly authentic glimpse into Catalonia’s roots.

The Roman Amphitheater of Tarragona

Overlooking the Mediterranean, this 2nd-century arena once held gladiator battles and public spectacles. A stunning reminder of Roman engineering and Tarragona’s imperial past.

Walk through one of the best-preserved Roman circuses in Europe and along the original city walls—testimonies to Tarraco’s former grandeur as a capital of Roman Hispania.

The Gothic-Romanesque Tarragona Cathedral

Built atop a former Roman temple, this serene and majestic cathedral combines architectural styles and offers panoramic views of the city and sea from its cloister.

Charming Old Town Streets

Discover narrow alleys, medieval arches, colorful façades, and hidden corners where Roman stones meet modern Catalan life in a unique historical layering.

A Traditional Winery in the Heart of Penedès
