About this tour

“Barcelona is a city that builds with soul — where stone, light, and purpose become one.”

Lluís Domènech i Montaner

Highlights & What’s included

Overview

Barcelona would not be the cultural and architectural capital it is today without the vision of one of its greatest minds: Lluís Domènech i Montaner. A true master of Catalan Modernism, Domènech was not only an architect but also a scholar, a professor, and a committed politician whose work helped define the aesthetic identity of the city.

If Barcelona had no Gaudí, people from all over the world would still flock here to marvel at the works of Domènech i Montaner. His creations — elegant, symbolic, colorful, and deeply rooted in Catalan identity — are some of the most celebrated examples of Modernisme, and two of them, Palau de la Música Catalana and the Hospital de Sant Pau, are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

This tour is a journey into the refined, expressive, and intelligent side of Modernism. You’ll discover the Barcelona of the elite — the distinguished neighborhoods, the architectural jewels that blend structural logic with decorative richness, and the brilliant minds who collaborated with Domènech, from sculptors to mosaic artists and stained-glass masters.

Inspired by Hispano-Arabic architecture and infused with the organic curves of Art Nouveau, Domènech’s work invites you into a world where beauty meets function, and tradition meets innovation.

Through this route, you’ll explore a Barcelona not dominated by Gaudí, but no less magical. Prepare to fall in love with intricate facades, radiant tilework, poetic spaces, and the unique architectural language of a man whose genius helped shape the soul of the city.

What will you see

Hospital de Sant Pau (Complete Visit – Interior & Gardens)

A masterpiece of urban design and medical innovation, this former hospital is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most remarkable Art Nouveau complexes in the world. Designed as a “city within the city,” it features interconnected pavilions, lush gardens, and exquisite ornamentation — from colorful domes to sculpted archways — all meant to promote healing through beauty and nature.

Palau de la Música Catalana (Complete Visit – Interior)

Another UNESCO-listed gem, the Palau is a symphony in stone, glass, and light. This iconic concert hall, built for the Catalan choral society Orfeó Català, dazzles visitors with its stained-glass skylight, floral columns, and sculpted muses. It’s one of the few concert halls in the world declared a World Heritage Site — and it’s as impressive acoustically as it is visually.

Castell dels Tres Dragons (Exterior)

Built as a café and exhibition space for the 1888 Universal Exposition, this striking, fortress-like building in Parc de la Ciutadella was one of Domènech’s earliest experiments with medieval revivalism and exposed iron structure. Its bold silhouette and decorative elements show his early vision of combining historical references with modern techniques.

Palau Montaner (Exterior)

A refined modernist residence that later became the seat of the Spanish government in Catalonia. The building showcases Domènech’s typical use of ornamental tile, carved stone, and structural balance. It’s an important piece linking his architectural style with his role in public life and politics.

Casa Thomas (Exterior)

This lesser-known gem is a fine example of Domènech’s ability to design private homes with unique personality and elegance. The façade is marked by intricate ironwork, floral reliefs, and careful symmetry, offering a more intimate glimpse into his artistic language.

Casa Lleó Morera (Exterior)

One of the crown jewels of Barcelona’s “Block of Discord,” this building stands out for its richly decorated façade, mosaics, stained glass, and sculptures. Although modified over time, it remains a symbol of early 20th-century luxury and craftsmanship.

Casa Fuster (Exterior)

Although not by Domènech, this building (designed by his follower Lluís Fuster) reflects the modernist grandeur of the era and complements the route beautifully with its noble appearance and elegant design, now home to a luxury hotel
